The Philadelphia Inquirer's Jim Salisbury reports that Mike Piazza will sign with San Diego. Piazza will compete with Doug Mirabelli for the starting job there.

Wow, I just wrote Mike Piazza and Doug Mirabelli would be in a competition for anything.

Update Ken Rosenthal has more details. Piazza's contract is believed to be for $2 million with an $8 million option for 2007.

LA has how many games against San Diego? 18, 19? Rafael Furcal is a lucky man.

I count 18 games between the Dodgers and Padres and the schedule is set up so they play one series against each other per month from April through September.

That's a shame, just once I wanted him to go to a hitters park. A career spent at DT, Shea, and now Petco.

Piazza has officially become the anti-Jim Rice.

It makes sense. The Padres are old and want to defend their division title. Piazza will help and isnt bad for the price. When Parks and Kleskos contracts come off the books next year, maybe they can sign some younger players with some talent.

Whatever became of all those Padre farmhands that BP drooled over? Except for Peavy, they've all been AWOL.

One of them was just traded for Mike Cameron, no?

...and another one for Dewon Brazelton. Nevermind.

The guy traded for Mike Cameron got buried at the end of the bench for unknown reasons too.
