Chiba Lotte Marines kick off Vegemite League season

by Bob Timmermann

The Japanese champs, the Chiba Lotte Marines have set up their training camp in Geelong, Victoria, Australia. Most of the other Japanese teams train in Okinawa, so there won't be many chances to watch games if you are passing through Geelong.

Instead, you might wish to go to The National Wool Museum. I know a lot of people have been itching to see that.

Unfortunately, Bob, the construction and groundkeeping people who configured the team's bullpen forgot to align the mounds and homeplate correctly in their indoor bullpen. Plus the distance between the mounds and homeplate in the pen was short of regulation. And then the roof (which I think is canvas) was so low that the catchers couldn't throw the ball back to the pitchers if the pitcher was standing on the hill.

Lotte neglected to send one of their own groundskeepers there to oversee things and the Aussie crews had never built a baseball complex before. So now the bullpen has to be redone.

So it sounds like the Marines are going to be spending a lot of time at the Wool Museum.
