Three Days in May
2006-05-14 18:32
by Bob Timmermann

When I looked at the "Transactions" lists on various wesbites for the past three days it seemed a little longer than normal. Or maybe it was my imagination. Here is a summary of those transactions.

  • San Francisco reactivated Ray Durham from the DL and sent Kevin Frandsen to Fresno.
  • San Diego put Rob Bowen on the DL with a thumb injury. They outrighted Dewon Brazelton to Portland. Woody Williams went on the DL with a calf injry. And Ben Johnson was optioned to Portland. The replacements were Paul McAnulty, Jon Adkins, Cla Meredith, and Jim Brower.
  • Philadelphia put Aaron Rowand on the DL with a broken nose. Geoff Geary was sent to Scranton/Wilkes-Barre (the minor league team that has TWO different punctuation marks!). Cole Hamels and Chris Roberson were called up.
  • Oakland purchased the contract of Randy Keisler from Sacramento. Matt Roney was sent down and Chris Maebus was designated for assignment. Justin Duchscherer was put on the DL with elbow tendinitis. Chad Gaudin was called up. And for good measure, Oakland purchased Steve Karsay from Cleveland.
  • The Yankees put Hideki Matsui on the DL with a broken wrist. Tanyon Sturtze went on the DL with shoulder tendinitis. Kevin Reese and Scott Erickson were brought up to replace them.
  • Kansas City optioned Steve Andrade to Omaha. They needed to make room for Chris Booker.
  • Houston activated Trever Miller from the DL and sent Ezequiel Astacio to Round Rock.
  • Cleveland called up Fausto Carmona from Buffalo. Danny Graves was designated for assignment.
  • The White Sox called up Agustin Montero from Charlotte and sent Charles Haeger back down.
  • Washington put Brian Schneider on the DL with a hamstring strain. Robert Fick was reactivated to take his spot. Wiki Gonzalez was called up from New Orleans and Justin Bergmann was sent down. Cristian Guzman was put on the 60-day DL.
  • The Mets called up Jeremi Gonzalez from Norfolk and sent Heath Bell down. Bartolome Fortunato was put on the 60-day DL with a torn ligament in his right elbow.
  • Milwaukee picked up Brian Shouse from Texas in exchange for Enrique Cruz and a player to be named later. Jared Fernandez was sent down to Nashville and Vince Perkins went on the 60-day DL.
  • Florida put Sergio Mitre on the DL with a sore right shoulder. Yusmeiro Petit was called up from Albuquerque to take his place.
  • The Cubs called up Jae Kuk Ryu from Iowa and sent Angel Guzman back to Iowa.
  • Seattle recalled Emiliano Fruto from Tacoma and optioned Bobby Livingston back down there.
  • Pittsburgh optioned Chris Duffy to Indianapolis and brought up Mike Edwards.
  • Cincinnati placed Kent Mercker on the DL with elbow inflammation and brought up Mike Burns.

According to the scouts Yusmeiro Petit won't wow anyone with his stuff but I think he has a potential to be a star.

In 346 innings in the minor leagues Petit has a WHIP of 0.94 and strikes out over 11 per 9 innings while giving up less than 2 BBs per 9.

#97: The real reason that the Phillies will be leaving Scranton next year? The thought of the Red Barons without Cole Hamels will be too much to bear.
