Deal of the Century struck

Tampa Bay has traded Joey Gathright to Kansas City in exchange for pitcher J.P. Howell. Kansas City also acquired minor league second baseman Fernando Cortez.

Just one more piece of the puzzle for Dayton Moore as he restores the Royals to their greatness of 2003.

The scary thing is that the 2003 Royals' season would be the greatest in Tampa Bay history.

Until 2007 anyways.

For a team that needs pitching and actually has a young centerfielder this is a bizarre trade unless Moore moves Gathright again.

Of course he could shock everyone and deal DeJesus for multiple prospects.

Maybe Moore is a disciple of Charlie Finley and wants to bring back the Allan Lewis/Herb Washington type player. That is the only possible use I can see for Gathright at the major league level.

Heh, your title reminds me of the occasional "Blockbuster Trade!" announcements in MVP Baseball 2005 that would wind up being two players you'd never heard of.

This is a dubious start to the next Royal dynasty...
