Phillies acquire Conine from Orioles
2006-08-27 14:44
by Bob Timmermann

The Phillies, hoping to catch some of the magic of the 2003 Marlins, have made a waiver deal to pick up Jeff Conine from Baltimore for a player to be named later.

In 2003, the Marlins acquired Conine from the Orioles on August 31, 2003.

Conine has had two separate stints with the Royals, Marlins, and Orioles in his 16-year career.

Funny, I just flipped to the Orioles game an hour ago and saw him batting, and thought to myself, wow, I didn't know Jeff Conine still played.

Why would anyone trade for him?

I hope the Phills capture the WC. I don't want the Dodgers playing the Cardinals in the first round.

Hmmm ... I wonder how long before Mike's Baseball Rants gives us the list with the player who played for the most teams twice.

2 If the Phillies are the Wild Card, the Dodgers won't play the Cardinals in the first round, unless I don't understand the rules.

2 4 OK, I completely mis-read your comment. I read a "don't" in the first sentence.

Never mind.

Keep on keeping on Jeff Conine. I played against him in Little League All-Stars and as long as he remains in baseball I feel I have a tenuous connection with MLB as well.

Terrific deal! This is like the Yankees picking up a Johnny Damon, the ChiSox adding an A. J. Pierzynski, the Dodgers picking up Greg Maddux...

1 - If you are 2 games out of a playoff spot and starting Abe Nunez or Chris Roberson, you trade for Conine. Period.

Jeff Conine is 6-0 in playoff series!
