Team USA secures Olympic berth
2006-09-03 23:19
by Bob Timmermann

The USA secured a spot in the 2008 Olympic baseball tournament with an 11-5 win over Panama in Havana.

The USA is 7-1 overall in the tournament (losing to Venezuela) and will face undefeated Cuba Tuesday. The Cuban team has also wrapped up an Olympic berth.

The Beijing games should be the last time baseball is on the Olympic schedule. The USA did not qualify for the baseball tournament in 2004 when they lost in a single-elimination round to Mexico in qualifying. Frank Robinson was in charge of that team. (Yes, that was gratuitous.)

Davey Johnson is the manager of the US team now.

A "gratuitous" mention of Robinson's failings? Gratuitous?! Hardly. Necessary? Demanded? Vital to the survival of the human race? These are more applicable terms, methinks.
