Mirabelli replies to Towers
2006-09-20 11:19
by Bob Timmermann

Doug Mirabelli, whom San Diego GM Kevin Towers excoriated earlier in week, replied in the Boston Globe.

Mirabelli was both upset at Towers for revealing what he considered a private conversation, but he also started speaking of himself in the third person.

``Considering the timing and how long I've been away from there, it seems unfortunate," he said. ``It seems unfortunate for me to have left that opinion with anybody.

``These guys have seen me around here a lot. To be taken so literally on some occasions was unfortunate. I don't apologize for wanting to come back here to Boston. I do apologize for the fact that if he has that strong of an opinion of Doug Mirabelli over a month or two months of time, I didn't do my job as a player or a person. I wouldn't want that opinion of me by anybody. That's not the perception of Doug Mirabelli that I would want anywhere."

But Rickey Henderson just uses his first name when he does the third person talking bit.

There's got to be some kind of statistical boundary passed before a player can refer to themselves in the third person.

I don't know where that boundary is, but Mirabelli's nowhere near it.

I support anyone who wants to get the hell out of the NL. Except for crappy overrated NL pitchers who want to steal the Yankee's money. I'm lookin at you Carl.

"It's funny the way people can think for Doug Mirabelli and say what Doug Mirabelli's gonna do," Mirabelli said. "Nobody knows what Doug Mirabelli's gonna do. That's the mystique of Mirabelli."

What is the NL, Siberia? Money's money, and if you have a chance to go to the world series - a better chance in the NL, the odds would have it, then nothing wrong with the NL. At least the NL has some strategy involved in managing the game, minus the DH. Underdog finds both leagues entertaining to watch in their own ways. Underdog doesn't find Kevin Towers very entertaining, however. Or the Padres.

1 What a lack of respect for the game. First what Towers revealed Mirabelli said, and now Mirabelli talks in the third person without having crossed the appropriate statistical boundary.

Where's Josh Beckett? Hasn't he taken care of this yet?!

2: "Surly only looks out for one guy, and that's Surly."

The Rickey Line, below which a player may not refer to himself in the third person, is at .401 OBP. Doug Mirabelli's overall OBP this year is .272. Ergo, he needs a tall glass of STFU.

Bob's lesson for today:

A good way to attract comments is to post derogatory stories about the Red Sox.

It's gold!

I must not have a lot of Red Sox fans who are readers.
