Alan Schwarz of the New York Times has a profile of a man believed to be the oldest professional baseball ever, Si Simmons, who is 110 years old (he turns 111 next month). Simmons played in the Negro Leagues from 1912 through 1929.

My parents were born in 1929. My parents have passed on. Simmons played for the Homestead Grays. In 1913. My grandmother was nine then.

Thanks to Johnny Nucleo for the pointer.

Simmons is old enough to be the great-grandfather of Julio Franco!

Simmons is almost old enough to vanish into thin air during a birthday party for himself and his nephew!

In the offseason, Mr. Simmons smashed atoms at the first Burns family atom mill.
