Apparently, you can sob, but not cry in baseball in Japan
2006-10-28 09:36
by Bob Timmermann

The Daily Yomiuri has reports on the emotional reactions in Sapporo after the Nippon Ham Fighters Japan Series win. Tsuyoshi Shinjo, Atsunori Inaba, and Satoru Kanemura all cried during press conferences.

David Eckstein wouldn't cry.

David Eckstein cries all the time. You just can't tell because he doesn't have tears. He cries eye-black and dirt.

He cries eye-black and dirt.

...and leaves Lucky Charms behind in the toilet.

How fitting that any conversation that includes UCLA would necessitate lyrics from The Pretenders.

Well we're movin on up,
To the east side.
To a deluxe apartment in the sky.
Movin on up,
To the east side.
We finally got a piece of the pie.

Through early morning fog I see
visions of the things to be
the pains that are withheld for me
I realize and I can see...

that suicide is painless
It brings on many changes
and I can take or leave it if I please.

Bob, I don't think we've ever been granted your opinion on Karl Dorrell as UCLA coach.

Karl
Stop putting the game plan in your pants. It looks dorky.

14 We agree

Yes, any thoughts beyond that?

2006-10-29 11:09:57
16.   Bob Timmermann
If Dorrell is let go, the Bruins will likely get worse in the next 2-3 years before getting better.

UCLA needs more stability with its assistants too.

So I'll hold off on sending you that "Fire Karl" t-shirt.

I see the problems with UCLA football as being deeper than just having the wrong coach.

It's a structural problem. I believe that UCLA will NEVER play in a BCS championship game in my lifetime.

19.   Greg Brock
You would have to elaborate for me. I see a program that's a sleeping giant, with a famous stadium, great weather, a fan base with disposable income dying for a winner, and a decent football tradition.

Unless you think it's just not important to the university or UC system as a whole, in which case I agree (to some extent).

2006-10-29 14:33:14
20.   Bob Timmermann
I don't think the University cares enough and I don't think the fan base cares enough. And USC has too much history in its favor for UCLA to surpass them in football for any substantial length of time.
