The Angels jump into the lead for "worst FA signing" of the 2006 off-season.

Now, don't get me wrong ... Matthews has a nice combination of skills, but .... he is 32! He had his career year (in a batter's park) at 32! And now you turn around and give him 5 (!) years? At 10 million per year?

(shaking my head)

I don't think it is worse than the "other" LA's team signing of Juan Pierre.

OT: Baseball-Reference now has individual batting and pitching gamelogs for each player AND you can look at batting splits for each player. Very cool stuff!

USS Mariner has a great write-up/analysis of the GM Jr signing. Here is one paragraph.
The Angels apparently think that's a repeatable skill, and are now going to pay Matthews Jr $10 million a season for his age 32, 33, 34, 35, and 36 seasons. They could have claimed him on waivers any one of four times during the past five years, or traded a non-prospect for him, or signed him to a minor league contract when he was released by the Braves.

9 Is the extra .100 points of slugging percentage and likely inferior defense worth $86 million?

If GM Jr. regresses, he becomes Juan Pierre. The Angels will always be #2 in LA.
