The MVP settles contract

by Bob Timmermann

American League MVP Justin Morneau avoided arbitration with the Twins by signing a 1-year, $4.5 million contract.

The Twins also settled with Nick Punto (2 years, $4.2 million) and Lew Ford (one year, $985,000).

Joe Mauer, Michael Cuddyer, and Juan Rincon still have pending arbitration cases.

Hmm . . . is Terry Ryan waiting for Morneau to not be the reigning AL MVP to try to sign him to a long term deal and buy out his arbitration years (and maybe the first year of free agency)?

The low amount of money the Twins have committed to contracts beyond 2007 leaves me thinking it will be trivial for them to sign Morneau and Mauer to nice long term deals, and keep Johan Santana - even if they pay Santana $20M/year for 5 years.

How long until we see a Mike C chart of the smallest deals for MVPs?
