FAQs
Who's your Valentine?
2007-02-14 04:00
by Bob Timmermann

Is it the only major leaguer whose first name was Valentine?

Or do you feel somewhat in the middle about the day?

But was this Valentine ever confused with this one?

If you and your Valentine are going to have champagne tonight call this guy. (Or maybe his estate, since he's passed on.)

This Valentine has the rare distinction of making the All-Star team and being struck out by Gary Burghoff in an episode of "Fantasy Island". (Scroll down to "Superstar/Salem.")

This Valentine and this one as well just don't lend themselves well to any jokes.

And not one of the players born on Valentine's Day have Valentine in their names. Their parents obviously were more original than I was.

But who can forget Ender Wiggin's sister, Valentine? What? People who don't read science fiction you say? Well, pooh on them.

I'm single and I'm not doing anything for Valentine's Day! Just because I'm single doesn't make me any less valuble as a person. I don't need any holliday telling me I'm inferior to others.

Bob, you have delivered another perfect example of the alignment between your innate skills at research and your day job. One observation here though. Your Fantasy Island source thinks the Arboretum is 25 miles from Los Angeles. Maybe Fox Studios in Century City is that far away, but certainly not the show's home studio ABC or LA City Hall. Probably the bigger issue is why was I intrigued to look at a Fantasy Island reference.

Google Maps gives a driving direction of 17 miles from Downtown L.A. to Arcadia.

I picked that link because it was the only that explicitly mentioned Ellis Valentine appearing on that episode.

"Valentin" is the same as "Valentino" (like Val Pasucci) and "Valentine".

But my list would get too long.

Funny, the episode that Ellis Valentine appeared in featured Gary Burghoff. I had a dream last night that I was on a bus headed across the bridge to San Francisco, and everyone on the bus except me and my wife was a member of the cast of M*A*S*H*. I hadn't thought about Burghoff in years, really, and now here he comes up twice in one day.

But one IS named "Candy."

I once had a crush on this Valentine:

Now I'm going to have the "Room 222" theme going through my head all night.
