Double-barreled milestone action today...

Craig Biggio picked up hit #3000 today with an RBI single against Aaron Cook of the Rockies in the 7th inning tonight at Minute Maid Park. Biggio was thrown out at second by Willie Tavares Taveras Colorado's center fielder trying to stretch it into a double.

When was the last day there was double-barreled milestone action? (No, Ryan/Henderson and Stewart/Valenzuela don't count.)

Bob, is this the first time a player gets gunned down when they hit # 3,000?

I believe George Brett got picked off first immediately following his 3,000th hit.

I know Brett was picked off. Some people were angry at the Angels pitcher, Tim Fortugno I believe, for doing it, but I don't see why Brett should have been given any leeway.

I do not know if any player was out trying to stretch on hit #3000, but I would be inclined to say no. The vast majority of these hits are singles.

Wade Boggs hit a homer and Paul Molitor hit a triple.

Biggio's the second guy to get 4 hits in the game he reached 3,000. The other time it happened I was one of the very, very few people in the stands.

Please Bob, TavErAs. You're channeling the spirit of Tim McCarver. No offense. And huge congrats to Biggio, heck of a guy.

No matter how often I see that guy's name, I never get it right.

8 Probably because all you hear are English speakers pronounce it. Usually, spelling in Spanish is easy because the vowels always sound the same.

9 Yeah, most other languages (especially Spanish) are completely phonetic, so pronunciation is pretty easy.

I hate to be all nitpicky, but you misspelled Taveras' other name too.
