The Hughie Jennings Watch
2007-08-06 17:45
by Bob Timmermann

I put it on the sidebar so you can track the progress, but Craig Biggio is running out of time in his quest to pass Hughie Jennings for the alltime HBP record.

The Onion covered the topic better.

Pedro Astacio hit Biggio the most times, 7. Biggio has been hit just three times this year, the lowest total of his career since 1991.

For those meaningless games the Astros will inevitably be in as they play out the strings, perhaps opposing pitchers will graciously throw changeups at him, unlike Eric Gagne who apparently agreed NOT to throw changeups to Bonds for one particular PA.

Nobody wants to be known as the guy who hit Biggio for the last time.

Not that I know who was the last pitcher to hit Jennings. It happened in 1903 when he was a player/coach for Brooklyn.

Jennings suffered a lot of neurological problems in his life.

2 No wonder, well back into the pre-helmet days. Biggio's mark, if he makes it, should carry an asterisk for that reason.

Jennings was hit 241 times between 1894 and 1900. He a career OBP of .390.

Has anybody seen a lot of Biggio this year? Is his approach different? I know he's old, but the HBPs have fallen off a steep cliff.

Biggio gets hit about 2.31% of his plate appearances; Ron Hunt (243 career plunkings) was hit 3.95% of his! Hunt also went out on top, leading the league each of his last seven seasons.

5 Man, it's tough to take that pounding once you're on the wrong side of 40.

There's also the problem of him not playing as much. And the pitchers go after him differently I assume.
