Puerto Rico cancels winter baseball season
2007-08-16 17:15
by Bob Timmermann

After 69 years of play and participating in every Caribbean Series since 1949, the operators of the Puerto Rican winter league have decided to call off the upcoming season with hopes of reorganizing and starting again after the 2008 MLB season.

"Today is a day of mourning for Puerto Rican sport," said former St. Louis pitcher Mike Perez, president of the players' association on the island. "We knew the league was in a crisis but we didn't think this day would come."

The owners of the six teams voted unanimously to shut down a league that has seen a steady decline in attendance for the past decade, league president Jose Andreu Garcia said.

"It's no secret the league has been facing difficulties," Andreu said. "Confronted with this reality, we decided to evaluate what we have see what we can do in a reasonable amount of time."

This is very sad. How will I get my Winter Alex Cora fix? Is there any rule that says he can't play for Venezuela or Mexico (DR can probably do better)?

There's no rule preventing him from playing winter ball in another country and then representing that country in the Caribbean Series. But I doubt he'd do that, as he probably only plays in the PR league because he winters there anyway and it's a good way to get in shape before heading to spring training.

Who will take Puerto Rico's place in the Caribbean World Series? I doubt it will be Cuba.

A Spanish language story says that Puerto Rico will form a special team for the Caribbean Series.
