Interestingly, the secondbaseman usually plays not half way between but significantly closer to first than to thrid. The shortstop and secondbaseman both play equally close to the actual secondbase. I've always wondered why the right mid-infielder got named after the base he is closest to while the left mid-infielder got a strange name that doesn't make a whole lot of sense.
