We're off on the road to Bratislava

by Bob Timmermann
Actually, I'm taking the train from Vienna to Bratislava as it is just one hour away and with my railpass it's costing me just €4. My copy of The Economist cost me €5.20.

I was going to post a few pictures from my "Third Man" walking tour last night, but the wifi at my hotel did not cooperate. Oh T-Mobile is there any part of the world you don't provide poor service. The doorway where Harry Lime made his first appearance in the film will stay in my camera for a while.

My Blackberry, with one exception, has been a workhorse this trip. It's amazing how I can keep in touch with people back home while still being halfway around the world. I may go make a pilgrimage to RIM's headquarters.

My last full day is starting out a little rainy, but that has been the exception on this trip. Yesterday in Vienna was a gorgeous day, sunny and close to 50.

Now I just hope the good people of Bratislava have a tourist office in the train station or this could be an interesting trip. Somebody look up the name of the ambassador to Slovakia for me.

I'm sure you already know this, but one of my more fascinating World Geography stats is - Bratislava is the only capital city in the world that is right on the border of two other countries.

Have fun Bob.

Thanks.

As a tip, if a comment doesn't show up the first time, just type "test" and that should clear out the cache.

There's a third country? Hungary is still a bit far away.

You're in luck Bob. They do have a tourist information desk in the Bratislava main train station.

I do remember a geography trivia question where Bratislava is supposed to be on the border of both Austria and Hungary. I'll try and find a map and see how far Hungary is... or you can let me know. :)

You're probably right about Hungary. Google Maps shows a bit of room between Bratislave and the Hungary border. Not sure if it is Bratislava's suburbs though or if that counts.

I have survived Bratislava. The biggest problem is that I'm wet and I picked the one ATM out of the 15 in the train station that was broken and ate my card.

Fortunately, I had enough cash. However, I read the instructions on my rail pass and I think I messed up my last date and I may have to buy my ticket to Munich. If this is true, please listen for my scream.

Isn't Bratislava a Steely Dan song?

Bratislava really wants tourists, but they certainly weren't many today. I hiked all the way up to the castle and found little to see there.

It is a pretty city, but it suffers if you compare it to Prague. It is cheap though.

Now I wait for my train, which is called the Orient-Express. But it goes to Strasbourg. My pass should be good for this train according to the ticket agents in Vienna.

I'm sorry I didn't see this post sooner. I lived in Brat. for a year. Excellent city but you're right, not much for tourists.

Zak - if you're driving from Bratislava's centre, it's about 10 minutes to the Austrian border and a little less than 15 to Hungary.

As of this month, there's no border stop for travelers between either of those countries.

Are you telling me there are places that don't suffer when compared to Prague?

Bratislava in warm weather--once of the most romantic places I've ever been.
