This is known as a downgrade

by Bob Timmermann

The link on ESPN.com reads "Twins fill spot vacated by Santana with Hernandez."

The Twins gave Livan Hernandez a 1-year, $5 million contract. Look for plenty of souvenir baseballs to be deposited into the left field bleachers at the Metrodome this year.

It's a crying shame that the Twins can't keep and pay Santana. Except for the crying part. But I don't think this is good for baseball.

Meh, I look at it as Livan replacing Silva, with Liriano replacing Santana. It's still a downgrade, but not quite as big as if you look at it as Livan replacing Santana.

Mike Davis and Mickey Hatcher, home runs in the 1988 World Series, game 5.

I'm not sure if you mean a downgrade for Livan, or for the Twins. Although it's really both.

Rob Neyer is right.

$5M wasted on Livan. $4M wasted on Craig Monroe. Another $4M+ wasted last year on Ponson and Ortiz. Total wasted money: $13M. And the Twins claim they couldn't afford to keep Santana? GMAFB.

He'll eat a lot of innings and potato lefse.
