MLB Extra Innings Center Ice

by Bob Timmermann

A call to customer service at Time-Warner Cable inquiring why all my MLB Extra Innings channels (except one) were showing hockey.

"You're wondering why we're showing hockey aren't you?"

"Yes, I am."

"Well, MLB has to share the channels with the NHL."

"But you're showing the same NHL games on two different channels. And I didn't pay for any of them."

"That's interesting."

"But hockey is not baseball."

"I know."

"So when will this end?"

"I don't know. Maybe when baseball season gets started."

"Baseball season has started."

"Maybe when hockey season ends."

"Hockey season goes until June."

"That's a problem I guess."

I'm getting the baseball games just fine on DirecTV. I gave up on cable monopolies a long time ago.

I'm going to picket outside the office at Time-Warner tomorrow with a sign that says "Baseball is not hockey!"

And I like hockey. I just don't see why they need to show the same hockey game on two different channels while not showing a baseball game.

See, I had a perfectly good Extra Innings day. First I wanted to watch the Mets game, and that was on. Then I wanted to watch the A's game, and that was on. Then I wanted to watch the Rockies game, and I drove right up to the ballpark and damned if they didn't sell me tickets and let me sit right there and watch it in person.

On the other hand, weren't all of the spots in the NHL postseason determined before games began today? Are hockey fans REALLY clamoring for a full Saturday slate of meaningless exhibitions?

Again, I don't begrudge the hockey fans their games. But why did they have to show the same hockey games twice? That makes no sense.

3 - What hockey game was it Bob? Because I have no idea why you would be complaining unless you had to watch the LA Kings.

4 - Um, Mark, only the Western conference spots are all determined already. Today's Flyers/Rangers game was between two teams that could potentially finish anywhere from 3rd to 7th seeds, and there are still two or three teams fighting over the 8-spot. Also #s 1 and 2 are currently tied with two games left. Soooo there's a bit of hockey drama left in the season yet.

It was a full slate of games. I saw Washington beat Florida in a shootout. Shootouts only look like they should be exciting.

The way the new extremely unbalanced NHL schedule works, I was unaware there still WAS an Eastern Conference.

I don't know anything about hockey or cable or anything, but in the last few days I have been denied access to the home games of the A's, Giants, Dodgers, and Padres because of "regional broadcast restrictions" by MLB.tv. Apparently, if you live on the West Coast, you're not allowed to watch any West Coast team at home. I guess the reasoning is that I might not drive the 600 MILES to see the A's or Giants if I'm allowed to watch their games live on the internet.

Jesus Christ.

At least my cable company speaks to me.

Can't say that's an improvement though.
