Rangers Get Carlos Lee
2006-07-28 09:18
by Ken Arneson

The AL West just got a little more interesting, as the Texas Rangers acquired Carlos Lee and Nelson Cruz for Francisco Cordero, Kevin Mench, and Laynce Nix.

Erik Siegrist thinks the Brewers got robbed.

I wonder how much of this trade was about Texas getting rid of Cordero ... wasn't he the chair thrower?

"robbed" seems a little strong. Lee is already gone, so they gave up a good prospect for some useable players.

The kinds of players that get talked about at deadline time are almost always guys like Lee, who will test the waters come winter, or Odalis Perez, Bobby Abreu and JD Drew, who teams want to unload b/c they made stupid decisions to give them too much money and want to offload.

It's a Turkish bazaar. If I were a GM, I'd spend this weekend hiding in a mosque, praying.

Courtesy of the print edition of SI this week, I can tell you that Mench is considered a mid-range MLB player, making $2.8M this year. In previous years he made:

2002: $135,802
2003: $327,500
2004: $345,000
2005: $345,000

Career stats: .274, 80HR, 262 RBI.

When I was working for other people I should have gotten raises like the one he got this year

I think I'm going to wait till how Soriano and /or Abreu goes down before I make an assesment, at present, I think it's a ok trade, Mench is a average OF that does everything decent but not great, Cordero is another ok reliever... stilll though, I wonder if they could get more.

(But now words are around that the Phillies may end up just strait out dumping Abreu +Lieber to the Yankees.. ouch, that's a long way down from Hughes and Tabata for Abreu and Lester or Hansen for Lieber :P, Gillick is in a tough hole to sort out the mess that Ed Wade left him though. too many bad backload contracts.
