Varitek out 4-6 weeks ... or more

by Bob Timmermann

The Boston Red Sox had to put catcher Jason Varitek on the disabled list today with a knee problem that may or may not require arthroscopic surgery.

Ken Huckaby was recalled from Pawtucket and was instructed to attack Derek Jeter's shoulder if the situation arises again.

As Rick Sutcliffe pointed out yesterday on ESPN, the key to the Red Sox winning the AL East is for them to win a lot of games.

The Red Sox made a lot of other moves too including designating Hee-Seop Choi for assignment.

So sad for Choi. But in all fairness, he sucked pretty badly, before getting hurt.

I'll take this chance to ask, what does "designate for assignment" means exactly? What assignment? In other sports, they use a more intuitive term like, "released."

The Red Sox have 10 days to either trade Choi or send him through waivers. If he makes it through waivers with no claims, he would likely just stay in Pawtucket.

I was wondering if they hadn't already done that when they sent him to Pawtucket in the first place, but I gather what they're doing now is taking him off the forty-man roster.

3 Right, before he was optioned, thus on the 40-man. Now he's been DFAed, thus off the 40-man.

Bob, your second line is hi-larious. Third line's pretty good too.
