Twins may trump Gophers
2006-09-14 20:35
by Bob Timmermann

If Minnesota finishes up as the AL Central champ and the second best record in the AL or as the wild card team, the University of Minnesota will have to shift its scheduled game against Penn State from October 7 to November 25. If the Twins either finish with the best record or as AL Central champ but with a record worse than that of the East and West champions, the Gophers game would not be affected.

And, of course, the Twins could also miss the playoffs.

Other football games rescheduled for playoff baseball:

In 2003, the Michigan/Minnesota game scheduled for Saturday, October 11, was shifted to Friday, October 10 because of Twins playoff games. Minnesota would blow 28-7 and 35-21 4th quarter leads, losing 38-35.

In 1997, the Miami Dolphins/Chicago Bears game originally scheduled for Sunday, October 26, was moved to Monday, October 27, because of Game 7 of the World Series.

In 1990, the October 14 Cincinnati Bengals home game against the Houston Oilers was moved to Houston (a December game between the teams was moved to Cincinnati) because the game would have conflicted with Game 7 of the NLCS.

In 1986, the NL East team was supposed to get Games 1, 2, 6, and 7 of the NLCS at home, but the Oilers were playing the Bears on October 12 (the day of Game 4, so the Astros were given home field instead.
