When mascots attack

Coco Crisp of the Boston Red Sox narrowly avoided injury today in Seattle when the Mariners Moose mascot narrowly missed hitting him with an ATV outside the Boston dugout.

From the AP story:

"It didn't hit me flush. I didn't see it, but I heard it," Crisp said of the ATV, which he moved away from the last instant to avoid a potentially serious injury.

"Weird."

Seattle GM Bill Bavasi called down to Boston manager Terry Francona very quickly to apologize and presumably this particular Moose is now unemployed.

"I told him we're taking care of it," Bavasi said after the game, referring to perhaps a now ex-employee.

"I actually got a very kind message from Bill Bavasi," Francona said. "It would have been a horrible accident."

Perhaps Randall Simon had the right idea all along.

Hmmm . . . wonder if the Moose background check missed that brief stint as the Stanford Tree?

The Stanford Tree is not allowed to be sober. That's one of the problems.
