The Mighty Micah at the bat
2007-09-27 11:49
by Bob Timmermann

Arizona manager Bob Melvin decided to start Micah Owings at the last minute today in Pittsburgh instead of Brandon Webb because he feared that rain delays (and there is one now) might make Webb unavailable for the whole game.

So Owings started and in addition to shutting out Pittsburgh over 7 innings, Owings has gone 4 for 4 with 3 doubles. The only other pitcher in the last 50 years to have at least four hits in a game and three extra base hits was ... Micah Owings. That was this game in Atlanta on August 18.

Three other pitchers in the last 50 years have had three doubles in a game: Andy Messersmith, Bob Gibson, and Don Ferrarese.

Ferrarese had 4 career doubles in 137 PAs scattered over 8 seasons. What a cluster the 3 doubles are.

Gibson, well-known as a good-hitting pitcher, had six season where he was a full-time starter and had an OPS+ > 60; three were > 70 and one was 100.

I smell Silver Slugger. They do those for pitchers, right?

Yes, there are Silver Sluggers for pitchers and I would be shocked if Owings didn't win it.

Owings 2007:

.339/.361/.695/1.056 with 7 2B, 1 3B, 4 HR, 9 R, 15 RBI.

I can't imagine any other pitcher being close.

How does Joe Crede win a Silver Slugger over ARod last season? The only offensive category Crede was ahead of ARod in was doubles, five more, more than offset by ARod having five more HRs.

4 Arod hit all those in meaningless situations, of course.

Because A-Rod won the Gold Slugger.

Wait, what? That doesn't exist? Huh.

The Silver Slugger goes to Jason Marquis. It's tradition. And who is this Arizona manager you speak of?

8.   Bob Timmermann
Jason Marquis isn't hitting that well this year.

He's batting .139. He won the Silver Slugger just once and that was in 2005. I think he was disqualified last year because he pitched so poorly. And Al Hrabosky didn't seem to like him.

I have met Don Ferrarese. He used to own a deli in Victorville where I dined on rare occasions.

You may carry on with you day now.
