Bedard heading to Seattle? (Updated)
2008-01-27 18:20
by Bob Timmermann

According to Geoff Baker of the Seattle Times, the Mariners are set to acquire Orioles lefthander Erik Bedard in exchange for outfielder Adam Jones. Further players could be involved, but Jones and Bedard appear to be the principals.

UPDATE - In the Baltimore Sun, Orioles president Andy McPhail denies that any deal is in place.

The Mariners aquired an ace-calliber pitcher in exchange for Adam "Pac-man" Jones?

The Orioles, through the Baltimore Sun, deny that there is a trade.

Jones is 22-years of age if my math is right. Glancing at his baseball reference page, he knocked the stuffing out of the ball at every level of the minor leagues, had below average plate discipline and hasn't done a whole lot in very limited time with the big club.

By himself, he's not worth Bedard so I'll be stunned if this is a straight up trade.

Jeff Clement, the once-mighty-now-tarnished catching prospect, is supposedly the other major player going to Baltimore.

4 He wouldn't happen to be related to Jack Clement, the greatest left-handed catcher of all-time.

Watching "The Wire" has made me distrustful of the Baltimore Sun.

Except for Gus, the city editor.

What did Roger Twigg and Alma Gutierrez ever do to you?

3 That they got 5 guys for Tejada makes me really doubt this was a straight-up trade.

The Mods at USS Mariners think that...

Adam Jones > Erik Bedard

they have a good point when you look at the fact that Jones is under team control for 6 years at a cheap rate and plays good defense. For one year Bedard is better, for two years perhaps a wash and beyond that...

I like how the editor in chief on The Wire calls Gus "Augustus."

Wouldn't the final calculation be
Bedard for two years + multiple draft picks when he leaves
or
Bedard for two years + for how many years if he signs as a free agent
or
Bedard for one year and then when Seattle realizes they aren't any good whatever prospects they get from Boston or the Yankee's in the winter of 2008.

Clement is still a strong prospect. He's not a very good catcher but he can hit.

The other players would seem to be crucial to a judgement of this trade. How long can they reasonably be expected to keep the details under wraps.

Word in Seattle here is that they might make a run at Sammy Sosa to replace Jones in right. Yikes.

The other players that have been mentioned are pitcher George Sherrill, pitcher Chris Tillman and shortstop Carlos Triunfel. Adding Clement to that list would represent the M's top-4 prospects according to John Sickels.
