The Astros tortured offseason continues
2008-02-20 18:38
by Bob Timmermann

Houston signed free agent pitcher Shawn Chacon to a one-year, $2 million deal. Chacon joins other off-season acquisitions such as Darin Erstad, Chad Paronto, Jack Cassel, Jose Valverde (well he's not that bad), Miguel Tejada (he comes with baggage, but it's not Samsonite), and Kazuo Matsui. Jose Cruz and Lance Niekro have tryouts.

It's going to be a long year for Cecil Cooper.

Pittsburgh made up for Chacon's absence by signing Byung-Hyun Kim.

The Pittsburgh Pirates slogan for 2008: We're keeping Houston from finishing last!

For several years now I've been wondering how long it would take the Astros to get around to signing Jose Cruuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuz.

I'd rather have Kim on my team.

Was Chacon even a B grade FA?

well if there's a team that actually have a staff horrible enough where Chacon might actually be worth 2M i guess the Astro is it.

as for Kim, he's actually potenially pretty good if you use him right from the bullpen, he's REALLY tough on righties and strikes people out often (but walk almost as often heh) still though, he's a type of guy that really might catch fire and be a good trade chip at the deadline.
