A headline that seemed witty 90 years ago

But now it just sounds downright creepy.

From the May 23, 1918 Sporting News article about the suicide of former player and manager Patsy Tebeau.

Patsy Tebeau Acts as His Own Umpire

Obviously a different sense of taste and tact back then.

Those guys were the guys that gave birth to the guys that were the gretest generation. Some of them were the actual guys that created the greatest generation.

These guys just beat the Kaiser. No honor in that.

These guys wouldn't beat the Kaiser for a few more months.

4 Did they really beat the Kaiser?

Some would contend they never lost. Some would go so far as to say they were stabbed in the back.

I'll stop.

It's better than the subheadline just below: "Tebeau tells self, 'You're out!'"

There is another headline on the page that reads "Blewett's League is a Most Lively Corpse."

Baseball player suicides are a lot rarer now than they used to be. I wonder if it's the money.

There's what appears to be a fairly comprehensive list at this site:
http://www.thedeadballera.com/suicides.html

It's kind of depressing. Most players shot themselves, or hung themselves, or used carbon monoxide, but there were some pretty unusual methods too:

Opium Overdose
Slit His Throat After Killing His Wife And Two Children
JUMPED FROM A STEAMER INTO THE ATLANTIC OCEAN
SLIT HIS THROAT WITH A HUNTING KNIFE AFTER AN OPERATION FAILED TO RESTORE HIS PITCHING ARM
SHOT HIMSELF IN A POLICE STATION
SHOT HIMSELF AFTER KILLING HIS WIFE
HUNG HIMSELF IN JAIL AFTER BEING CHARGED WITH RAPE
DROVE HIS CAR OVER A CLIFF
