by Bob Timmermann

Geremi Gonzalez, who had his promising pitching sidelined by arm injuries after an 11-win debut season with the Cubs in 1997, died Sunday in Venezuela after being struck by lightning.

Gonzalez last pitched in the majors in 2006 and pitched briefly in Japan this season.

He was on a beach at the time. Of all the places to be struck by lightning, I would think a beach would be pretty safe territory.

I saw Gonzalez pitch for Pawtucket a couple of times. That's a shame.

Didn't the same thing happen to Bo Diaz, another Venezuelan with Red Sox ties?

Bo Diaz was crushed by a satellite dish at his home that he was trying to reposition.

According to some lightning safety sites, I read, a beach is a terrible place to be if there is lightning around.

For the most part, a person is the highest point around on the beach.

Not only that, beach sand is usually wet and salty. It's the electrical equivalent of standing on a big ol' sheet of copper.
