Boston leads Los Angeles 1-0.

Tonight's question to ponder:

I grew up near a street called Celtic Street. And since we didn't know any better and assumed that "Celtic" was always pronounced with an "S" sound at the beginning, we pronounced it like the basketball team. But should we have pronounced the street name with a harc C at the beginning?

I should be at Dodger Stadium for this game where the crowd will no doubt be cheering or booing at inappropriate times for a baseball game.

Yes, you young lads were obviously confusing the name with a prehistoric stone or metal implement shaped like a chisel or ax head.

the 3 point shot is different in college than in the pros, I don't get that, I mean it should be like in baseball were the mound is the same, you know what I mean?

The neighborhood doesn't offer much in the way of help. Here in the DF streets in neighborhoods generally follow some sort of subject. I live in an area that is a grid of streets named after Mexican states and Mexican state capitals. There is a neighborhood nearby that uses the names of US states and another with names of the world's major rivers. In your old neighborhood I see little rhythm or reason for street names. Kinda neat living by Gothic St., however, no?. Its a cross street and not a parallel, but whatever, I will say that you kids were wrong.

It was Gothic Avenue.

That one I know. I lived on it! And I co-own a house on that street.

Whenever I pronounce the name "Celtics" with a hard C, the locals give me the Eye of Death.

One of life's great mysteries: Why the "Celtics" in "Boston Celtics" is pronounced with a soft "c"?
2008-06-08 16:09:56
13.   Bob Timmermann
"Celtics" is one of the oldest names for a pro basketball team. I would blame the coal miners of Western Pennsylvania for pronouncing it wrong.

14.   Bob Timmermann
I did not know that the Scottish soccer team also using uses the soft C pronunciation.

Stick to baseball. Why should some kid playing community college have to make a professional 3 pointer?
College baseball players use metal bats, do the professionals?

blah blah blah officiating blah blah blah

I honestly can't believe that Jeff Van Gundy let Mark Jackson say that Paul Pierce is as good as Larry Bird was on offense. Larry Bird is one of the 5 greatest players of all time, and it wasn't because of his defense.

38 I'm not even gonna bother trying to watch the halftime show. I also can't stand Mark Jackson. He completely cancels out Jeff Van Gundy's honest humor and astute observations.

I find Van Gundy pretty funny, but I don't know if it's just me being weird or something. But yeah, Marc Jackson is really horrible.

I think Marc Jackson and Van Gundy kind of hate each other, they have several arguments that become fairly uncomfortable. I don't know whether to laugh or feel awkward.

Jeff Van Gundy is hilarious as a commentator. He was made for it. We get to see his personality come out instead of seeing him on the sidelines looking dead.

He is hilarious, I feel like he has no filter on what he says, he just sees something and then just says it. Even if I don't agree, I'm always like, "that was funny Jeff, we should have a beer some time."

I wonder if his brother is the same way.

Had to eat dinner first, but, yeah, wow, that was crazy. A loss is a loss, but it was nice to come away from that game not feeling humiliated and at least by making Celtic fans sweat a little. So many obnoxious moments in that game that it's not even worth rehashing, but on the other hand the Celtics did play some pretty great defense for much of the game. Having no fouls called on them didn't hurt that, either of course.

But I was about to turn the game off in disgust when the deficit was over 20 points, and something told me, nah, basketball is crazy, you never know...

67 - Vlad was in the right spot a couple times late, he had the assist to Sasha on the big three (off of a Kobe or Fisher steal) and then got the steal and dunk on the next possession. He's no Tony Kukoc, but not a bad guy to have around.

As a side note, insomnia is Dead to Me.

2008-06-09 11:11:57

No doubt, Vlad contributed on offense, and that's why he gets as much playing time as he does. All true, but it doesn't change the fact that he plays atrocious defense and it was particularly egregious last night. But I won't point fingers in blame at him either.

Btw, never thought I'd look to Fox Sports to back me up on this, but:
