Recalling Mike Coolbaugh
2008-07-23 05:23
by Bob Timmermann

A year and a day ago, Tulsa Drillers first base coach Mike Coolbaugh was killed during a game against the Arkansas Travelers when a foul ball off the bat of Tino Sanchez hit Coolbaugh in his neck, rupturing his left verterbral artery and killing him almost instantly.

The radio announcer for the home team Travelers, Phil Elson, was interviewed by Ron Cook of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette. Pittsburgh is Elson's home town.

After Coolbaugh's shocking death, I have never been able to put my hands together and cheer for any coach that objects to wearing a helmet in the coaches box. I mean, Larry Bowa could waive home the winning run of the seventh game of the World Series, get all the credit for that run being scored, and I'd still look for someone else to high five.

OT--one of my favorite writers on the net is Eric Alterman. He asks this about his favorite team: "I'd be willing to bet American dollars that over the past 40 years, the Mets have the lowest ERA of any pitching staff. If it's not the lowest, it's close. Could somebody check that, please?"

How would one find out this information? Does Baseball Reference have that kind of search engine? Just curious...

You'd have to download the team totals and put them in a spreadsheet.

I would bet that the Dodgers would be lower over the same time period. The Astros would be pretty close, although their Minute Maid Park years would hurt.

3 These are franchise totals. Milwaukee includes the Seattle Pilots, Texas includes the Washington Senators, and Washington includes the Montreal Expos.

This was done by summing up individual totals from the Lahman database; as stated above, team unearned runs charged as earned runs to relief pitchers are included as earned.
