Reds do soul searching

by Bob Timmermann

Before the Reds went out and saw the Nationals complete their series sweep against them, the men from Cincinnati held a players-only meeting.

It is not known if the Reds discussed that they would be better off with different players. Such as good ones.

"Walks at the wrong time, errors—a lot of errors—physical and mental errors—a lot of opportunities for the opposition. Most of the time we've been scored upon first," Baker said.

But I thought all walks did was to clog up the bases? I are confused...

1 I think he means walks by the pitchers.

2 - I know that. But Baker's comment about walks from an offensive perspective was to minimize their value. If they're not valuable to the offense, they shouldn't be a problem for his own pitching/defense. That they aren't is clearly amusing.

At least Corey Patterson is gainfully employed.

3. But he even hedged that statement by saying "walks at the wrong time" by which he presumably means with the bases loaded in the bottom of the ninth of a tie game. Because if the other team wants to clog up their own bases why should he get upset?
