The Oakland Athletics became the sixth team in the majors to be eliminated from postseason contention after they were pounded in Detroit, 14-8 and Boston's 3-0 win over Tampa Bay.

The game featured Gary Sheffield hitting the 250,000th home run in major league baseball (1876 to the present) and Mike Hessman of the Tigers becoming only the second AL player to be hit by a pitch twice in one inning. Gio Gonzalez and Josh Outman did the honors.

Brady Anderson was the only other AL player to be hit by a pitch twice in one inning and that happened on May 23, 1999.

Are the American Association, Players League, and Federal League home runs included in that count?

I'm quite disappointed that the A's only got to walk into a little candle, when all these other teams got to walk into large shafts of light emerging from the heavens.

But I suppose the disappointment is fitting for this utterly uninteresting team.

3 Quite appropriate given the A's budget, no?
