by Bob Timmermann

Coming to you again from scenic Tropicana Field in St. Petersburg, it's Game 2 of the AL Division Series between the White Sox and Rays. Today's goal for the White Sox: keep Evan Longoria from becoming the second coming of Mike Schmidt.

It's a battle of lefthanders today in Mark Buehrle, who works quickly, and Scott Kazmir, who doesn't.

Kazmir is 3-1 in five career starts against the White Sox with a 3.31 ERA. Buehrle is 6-2 with a 4.34 ERA lifetime against Tampa Bay.

Lineups:

White Sox

Cabrera SS
Swisher LF
Dye RF
Konerko 1B
Thome DH
Ramirez 2B
Pierzynski C
Uribe 3B
Anderson CF
Buehrle P

Rays

Upton CF
Crawford LF

Is there a reason for these weird start times? Is it due to there being another game afterwards? Or just MLB weirdness...?

1 I think it just fits their viewing windows, there are more viewers in main parts of the counry Eastern and Central so they try to accomodate those viewers.

2 Right, but :07 seems odd. I'm sure there's some convoluted reason for it.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but I don't think any team starts on the hour. Some start at :05 after, some at :07 after (for some reason I think the Jays do this), some at :10 after.

I assume the :07 is to satisfy obligations for the amount of commercial time that TBS has sold.

The Blue Jays start at :07 because they found they were always running late.

The White Sox start at :11 because they have a sponsorship deal with 7-11 stores.

6 Cool, an extra few minutes for more Frank TV commercials. Great.

I think TBS should devote the 1st minute of each commercial break to showing the Victoria Secret runway models and the 2nd minute to Viva Viagra or Cialis.

Not the best possible start for Kazmir.

For those not scoring at home, I adjusted the starting lineup for the Rays to reflect Pena's absence.

Not to worry. Things seemed dire right after Wise hit the three run bomb and that lead lasted all of 10 minutes.

That's not a compliment.

Sorry, I was busy working. But... woo hoo.

Surprised that Kazmir is still in there, especially after that start. Wow.

Traveling in a fried-out combie
On a hippie trail, head full of zombie
I met a strange lady, she made me nervous
She took me in and gave me breakfast
And she said,

"Do you come from a land down under?
Where women glow and men plunder?
Can't you hear, can't you hear the thunder?
You better run, you better take cover."

Buying bread from a man in Brussels
He was six foot four and full of muscles
I said, "Do you speak-a my language?"
He just smiled and gave me a vegemite sandwich
And he said,

"I come from a land down under
Where beer does flow and men chunder
Can't you hear, can't you hear the thunder?
You better run, you better take cover."

Gosh. I never realized how uh, kooky Balfour is. Quite the amped up, self-talker out there on the mound.

Has anyone actually eaten a vegemite sandwich? An Aussie friend of mine made me one once. I almost spit it out.

Grant Balfour was acquired from Milwaukee for Seth McClung.

Both pitchers are in the playoffs.

And it's likely nobody cared last year when those two got traded.

I'd literally never seen him pitch before, so this is a new thing, The Grant Balfour Experience. It's best in stereo with HDTV of course.

29 You can make one easily, without the real stuff. Just get two slices of your favorite bread, and then vomit on both. Voila!

Okay, I'm off to start my moviewatching marathon (or ordeal). Check back with the Angels game later.

J.P. Howell, acquired in a trade from Kansas City for Joey Gathright.

Last winter I thought Ned was going to trade for Iwamura and make him our 3rd baseman. Just like DeWitt his offensive numbers play much more favorably as a 2nd baseman then as a 3rd baseman.
That was a nice move the for Rays to be able to move Upton to CF and fix the hole created by Rocco's injuries. Then move Iwamura over to 2nd to cover Upton's upgrade to CF, and replace Iwamura with Mike Schimdt without the growing pains. At each turn they upgraded the defense and topped it off with Bartlett. I thought their pitching was still two years away but the team looked set for the 1st time in history from the offensive/defensive side of things.

I thought Iwamura would turn into fan machine in the U.S. and while he does K a lot, he still gets a respectable number of walks.
