Lincecum takes NL Cy Young Award easily
2008-11-11 11:00
by Bob Timmermann

Tim Lincecum of the San Francisco Giants won the NL Cy Young Award by a comfortable margin over Arizona's Brandon Webb. Lincecum won 23 of the 32 first place votes with Webb and the Mets' Johan Santana getting four each. CC Sabathia of the Brewers picked up the other first place vote.

Lincecum is just the second Giants pitcher to win the Cy Young Award. Mike McCormick won the award in 1967.

Good job by the writers.

He deserved it.

1 Let's hope that now that he has won a CY Young Award, the Giants will watch his pitch count more closely in 2009.

I'm surprised, but they actually picked the right guy. It will be interesting to see the future of Tim and Kershaw. I still wonder if we made the right pick.

It will be interesting to see if Cliff Lee has a similar margin tomorrow, or if the shininess of K-Rod's save record garners some support.

Remember, the Griddle, like the Nebraska unicameral legislature, is nominally nonpartisan.

I think Lee will be a unanimous pick. Do you think either of the two voters from the Angels beat would vote for Rodriguez? They'd be the only ones whom I could picture voting for him.

You might be right. 22-3 is hard to vote against.

I have to admit that was a brilliant draft pick.

Is Lincecum the "youngest" Cy Young winner?

I believe that honor goes to Fernando Valenzuela.

I believe Gooden in 1985 was younger (by 15 days over Fernando).

Also, Vida Blue (1971) and Bret Saberhagen (1985) were 21 in their CYA seasons.

Clemens was 23 in 1986.

CYA Winners Younger Than Lincecum
20 - Gooden, 1985
20 - Valenzuela, 1981
21 - Blue, 1971
21 - Saberhagen, 1985
23 - Clemens, 1986
23 - Dean Chance, 1964
24 - Barry Zito, 2002

Good lord is that a painful website to look at! Thanks for the direct link Bob, now I know why so many of you guys do not take the BBWAA seriously...

So even when Clayton wins the Cy Young next year he won't even be the youngest on his own team. What a hack.

13 Last year I read the whole BBWAA article on the MVP voting and went blind for 11 days.

Good job on Lincecum, and I concur that now the Giants should take it easy on his arm.

As for Lee getting the Cy Young, where's the love for Roy Halladay. You should compare their opponents and see if Halladay doesn't deserve a bit more press.

This is the slash stats for the opponents facing AL pitchers with min 162 IP, ranked by highest OPS (yes, Lee ranks 38th)

# NAME AVG OBP SLG OPS
1. Garza .270 .341 .426 .767
2. Halladay.266 .342 .425 .766
7. Burnett .266 .340 .422 .762
15. Mussina .266 .338 .418 .756
16. Shields .266 .338 .416 .754
18. Dice-K .264 .335 .418 .753
38. Lee .262 .330 .405 .735

Lee lead the league in wins and era which are the two most important stats for Cy Young consideration.

12 thanks, but Lincecum definitely wins the "looks the youngest" competition.
