Dave Smith, an All-Star reliever for the Houston Astros, passed away Wednesday near San Diego at age 53 of an apparent heart attack, according to his former teammate Joe Sambito.
Smith picked up 216 saves in his 13-year career, all but 17 of them for the Astros. Smith made the NL All-Star team in 1986 and 1990.
I feel really bad that I was almost relieved it wasn't him.
I would also say that Retrosheet's Dave Smith is doing fine. And also older.
