Byrnes inks Byrnes
2005-12-30 09:05
by Bob Timmermann

Arizona GM Josh Byrnes has added "high energy" outfielder Eric Byrnes to the Diamondbacks.

Byrnes (the Eric variety) will likely get to start in center field. Right handed pitchers in the NL West have an extra special reason to celebrate on New Year's Eve now.

So which is worse, Gonzo, Byrnes, and Green, or Bonds, Winn/Finley, and Alou?

I think Arizona's outfield will catch more balls. But the offense will be far worse than the Giants.

3.   Suffering Bruin
Bill James wrote a few years back that no team has ever won a championship with three outfielders over the age of 35. I might be misquoting here but I know he was writing about the Baltimore outfield of Albert Belle, Brady Anderson and, I think, B.J. Surhoff.

I wonder two things: if it's still true and what championship team (say, league championship team) had the oldest outfield?

(Poster tries to keep from smirking from the subtle research challenge given... and fails miserably)

Oh what they hey, I'll check it out, too.

4.   Suffering Bruin
The 1999 Baltimore Orioles had 32-year old Albert Belle along with Anderson and Surhoff, 35 and 34 respectively. They were 79-83.

The same outfield the following year helped the Orioles to a record of 74-88. That was the last year they were together.

Maybe James was writing about outfields over 30? At any rate, it don't look for the Giants. Not that I'm crying about that...
