Paul Konerko has turned down the captaincy of the Chicago White Sox.
"The way our team operates best, it seems to me, is everybody has an equal voice," Konerko said.
However, Konerko says he will take the job if Ozzie Guillen and Kenny Williams insist on it. He doesn't wear to a "C" on his uniform. Perhaps he will settle for wearing an "A".
What really does it mean to be a team captain these days. Am I alone in thinking that Konerko's "all for one" sentiment is a big cop-out? The team is asking him to be the formal leader, which should be an honor, and he declines? It makes me wonder what he is afraid of, and it leads me to speculate that he doesn't want the responsbility of calling out fellow players when they aren't working hard or aren't listening to the coaches. OR another conspiracy theory would be that now Konerko has gotten his big paycheck, the team wants to ensure that he doesn't relax and continues to work hard. The captain tag says "watch me" as your example. Perhaps, Konerko doesn't want to be the example. Either way, I have lost respect for him.
...not counting the one in *C*hicago, of course.
Except maybe for J.D. Drew.
Some people are in it cause they love the game, some are cause they love the $$$.
