The Nationals have added some heft to their lineup. Daryle Ward has been inked to a minor-league contract. They also added pitcher Valerio de los Santos.
Daryle Ward's OPS+ year by year: 128, 100, 99, 96, 92, 10, 101, 88.
Also, John Wetteland has been named the Nats bullpen coach. Wetteland was chosen over several other candidates because Bowden liked the way he could hold a phone in one hand and still be able to point to two different relievers at the same time.
I had the pleasure of watching Ward (or "The D-Train" as he liked to call himself) in Pittsburgh the last two years. He wasn't great or bad really, but his power completely disappeared in June of last year and I think he only hit one homer from about June 8th until the end of the season.
My joke, which didn't work I guess, was that Wetteland, despite holding a phone in one hand was still adept at telling two pitchers at once to get up to warm up.
Grins. Time or Newsweek suggested that the reason for the failure of "Emily" had to do with the concept. The idea that Heather Graham couldn't find a man wasn't funny, it was laughable.
What was he swinging that year? A Ticonderoga #2?
Please explain this further (in other words, I don't get it).

I think it's more of a visual joke.
Does this have something to do with throwing a splitter maybe?
He is told to tell two relievers to warm up. He tells two relievers to do this at the same time by pointing at them.
But he has only free arm to point.
Hilarity ensues.
Hmm, now I know how the people who wrote "Emily's Reasons Why Not" felt.
A fine distinction, but not out of line.
