Pakistan, the new hot spot for baseball scouts
2006-04-26 21:08
by Bob Timmermann

Pakistan wrapped up the title in the Asian Baseball Cup with an easy 14-3 win over Thailand at Rawalpindi's Pindi Cricket Stadium.

This quote sounds like something out of the 19th century.

"We played in the tournament by adopting different strategies against different teams. We read our opponents before the start of the match. Boys worked really hard and showed their best in the whole event," captain Nabeel Ahmed said in his post match comments. He said Pakistan would display better game in the coming international events.

The Daily Times of Pakistan's story claims that Pakistan is assured a berth in the 2008 Beijing Olympics, but I have to think that it's just a spot in the qualifying tournament. I would have liked to have watched this tournament just to find out who Pakistani baseball fans are. Or Iranian ones.

Bob, I love your headlines. I often come here to read a story, lured by the headline in the sidebar.

o_O What in the...

I didn't even realize there was a asian baseball tournement this year (I live in Taiwan btw)

It seems most likely that the 3 real teams in asia (Japan South Korea and Taiwan) probably had nothing to gain in this tournement so they all send 3rd rate players if any players or something... as it is also professional baseball season in all 3 country.

I think this tournament was just for the lesser lights of Asian baseball. The five participants were Pakistan, Iran, Thailand, Sri Lanka, and Hong Kong.

Since Pakistan won the tournament, it gets to play in the Asian Games in December. Presumably against the big boys of Japan, Taiwan, and Korea.

Sadly, I will likely not be reading much of Mr. Kasim Ali's fine baseball writing anymore.

Heh, none of those countries are really known for baseball though, but I guess Pakistan have a edge since it's not that hard to find guys who are good at connecting a piece of wood to a flying ball or throw a small ball (aka cricket XD)
