In honor of the NBA and NHL playoffs, here are the MLB standings presented as you would see it in those sports. Playoff teams are in bold.

National League
Rank Team W L PCT Division

3 Colorado 15 10 .600 W1
4 Cincinnati 17 8 .680 C2*
5 Houston 16 8 .667 C3
6 Chicago 13 10 .565 C4
7 Milwaukee 14 11 .560 C5
8 San Francisco 13 11 .542 W2
9T Arizona 12 13 .480 W3

14 Washington 8 17 .320 E4
15 Florida 6 16 .273 E5
16 Pittsburgh 7 19 .269 C6

* St. Louis is ranked ahead of Cincinnati because both would get playoff spots and St. Louis holds tiebreaker advantage.

American League
Rank Team W L PCT Division
1 Chicago 17 7 .708 C1
2 New York 13 10 .565 E1
3 Texas 13 12 .520 W1
4 Detroit 16 9 .640 C2
5 Boston 14 11 .560 E2
6 Toronto 12 11 .522 E3
7 Cleveland 13 12 .520 C3
8T Baltimore 13 13 .500 E4
8T Oakland 12 12 .500 W2
10 Los Angeles 12 13 .480 W3
11 Tampa Bay 11 14 .440 E5
12 Seattle 11 15 .423 W4
13 Minnesota 9 15 .375 C4
14 Kansas City 5 17 .227 C5

Looks to me like the National League has become highly "Centralized". The AL is not quite as "Centralized".

Which is the biggest surprise?

  1. Cincinnati playing .680 ball?
  2. Colorado playing .600 ball?
  3. Detroit in the AL wildcard spot and knocking the cover off the ball?
  4. The AL West actually being a little worse than the NL West?

The NL Central is 54-28 at home in April.

The Colorado Rockies have won 10 of 13 road games this year.

The Kansas City Royals are 0-9 on the road.

The Washington Nationals are 1-7 at home.

The Mets are the only NL East team with a winning record at home.

San Francisco is the only NL West team with a winning record at home.

I think 1 & 2 are equally surprising. I picked the Tigers to finish third in the tough central based largely on their offense and the A's alway start slow and I was unimpressed by the rest of the AL West.

Playoff fever Bob, catch it!! Who are you picking to go all the way, your Sharks?

Also you might want to check the spelling of the AL 12-seed. And WHEN did the Yankees sneak back into first place??

I'm looking for a Calgary-Buffalo final. NBC would love that!

3 - NBC would love that like Fox did the 2004 NLCS. The only evidence that series ever happened can be found in Carlos Beltran's paychecks.

I think in terms of division the cetnral is definately the bigger surprise. in the AL who woulda thought the Tiger had a shot at it, and while we know the Twins probably won't contend we didn't think they were THAT bad...

NL is definately even more surprising with everyone except the Pirates in on the act .. who woulda though the Cubs could still win after suffering 3 huge injury before the first month is out... Brewers isn't that much of a surprise as we knew they were up and comming, Astros and espically Reds have been abosalutely amazing espically on the Reds part, who woulda thought Arroyo could be this good.. and hitting more HR than the "hitter" Boston traded him for lol!!

NL east is kinda surprising... in that BOTH the braves and Phils is sucking bad, we knew there was a good chance one of them would suck.. but both?

Oh yeah Another funky April record, the Yankees are 10-0 in day games.

Three different teams have led the AL East in the past three days: Boston, Toronto, New York.

Colorado doesn't surprise me now that I've looked at who they played in April. Padres (6 times), Phillies (7 times), Marlins (3 times), and Dbacks (6 times). They've only played three games against a team with a winning record in April (the Giants). I mean it's encouraging for them that they're beating all these bad teams, but they really haven't been tested yet.
