Mike Gillespie, who has coached the University of Southern California baseball team since taking over Rod Dedeaux in 1987, is retiring and Chad Kreuter is taking over for him. Gillespie led USC to a College World Series championship in 1998.
Kreuter's most memorable moment with the Dodgers may have been when he charged into the stands near the bullpen in Wrigley Field after a fan stole his baseball cap, igniting a brawl between several Dodgers and fans in the stands.
1- yup. I never liked Kreuter. It was nothing against him personally, but I hated how Chan Ho Park had a personal catcher. It was a bit ridiculous. When Kreuter started, it meant less playing time for Lo Duca and Hundley (when he was actually a good hitter). I seem to remember hitting a home run and the Dodgers winning the game 1-0.
2- Sorry, Bob. I guess I read the link too fast, and missed the reference.
When I read the AP story, which didn't mention the Chicago brawl, I thought to myself, why is that name familiar? Oh, right, he used to play for the Dodgers. Wait, I remember Chad Kreuter now...
It seems like a case of nepotism to me. At least USC disclosed the relationship from the get-go.

Grady Little wanted Sandy Alomar to be Odalis Perez's personal catcher. That lasted about four innings.
Jim Tracy wanted Paul Bako to be somebody's personal catcher last year, but then he got hurt.
The personal catcher is actually fairly old. I think it got more publicity because Tim McCarver talked about it a lot.
