WC 2006: Match Chat, Trinidad & Tobago vs. Sweden, 9 am PT

Live from Dortmund!

The Soca Warriors bring their steel drums and ampersands to take on the Blågult.

Trinidad & Tobago qualified as the fourth team out of CONCACAF and had to beat Bahrain on the road to make it. It's their first trip to the finals.

Sweden is making its eleventh trip to the finals. The Swedes finished second in 1958 when the World Cup was held in ... Sweden!

This is a pinball game so far. Lots of long balls bouncing around.

I can see why Sweden had trouble scoring this year. They don't work the ball down to Larsson and Ibrahimovic. They just boot long balls and hope it bounces to them. Those guys need to touch the ball more.

1. Interesting that in a sporting event of this magnitude, a major TV network while not notice who is starting in goal for one team. I think the announcers are on site. Some are working from the studio.

2. I like the fact that the Swedes went to the trouble of adding the diacritical marks one of the Slavic names: Lučić.

Sweden is start to figure out T&T's defense. They're gonna score...just a matter of time.

My grandmother was always upset at Slavic names that had the ending rendered as "-ich."

Which was odd since she didn't speak Serbo-Croatian although her parents did.

I'm detecting a genetic link here.

Hislop is having to work now.

Halftime. Swedes can't be happy that they're tied. They're dominating play, but they're not finding the back of the net.

Now I can go make some coffee. But there will be napping today especially after the England-Paraguay snoozefest this morning.

I also think the World Cup has better than average commercials. Adidas and Nike both have nice commercials. The adidas "pick up game" spot is very well-done.

My kid just flipped on the Batman cartoon (it's his turn with the TV) so...

who got the red card? Sweden or T&T?

The Swedes are on a 44-minute power play.

I just saw the replay (thank you TiVo!).

That was a competitive play on a 50-50 ball. I realize it gets called a lot and the referee doesn't have the best perspective but upon further review, the first contact was with the ball. I don't like the call.

This is disastrous. No way you can expect Sweden to advance the way they are playing. If they can't score against T&T, how are they going to do it against Paraguay and England?

Populations

Sweden: 9.016 million
Trinidad & Tobago: 1.065 million

I think Sweden has a big edge in the category of "number of islands" in the country. I think Stockholm has more islands than T&T.

There are a few small ones in T&T aside from the principal two.

What's startling about the Swedes is how inactive they are. The man with the ball and the man on the receiving end of the ball are moving. Nobody else is.

I never knew Stockholm was made up of several islands until I got there. I think I glossed over it in the tour guide.

The second most commonly spoken language in T&T is Hindi, although people who live there claim that Trini is a separate language.

The national song is not "Lemon Tree" however.

I'd be willing to bet Sweden has far more islands than T&T.

what's startling is the color of those uniforms. I'd like them to play Oregon.

This is probably the second-most embarassing game in Swedish sports history, after the hocky loss to Belarus in the Olympics in 2002.

I'm trying to see which color the Dutch will be wearing tomorrow. The hard part will be telling the two flags apart.
