Another pitcher in Arizona in danger of losing his job
2006-06-12 16:38
by Bob Timmermann

And Russ Ortiz isn't suspected of using HGH or steroids, he just plain stinks.

And the Arizona Republic's Bob McNanaman reports that Ortiz may be cut loose by the Diamondbacks despite being owed another $20 million over the course of his contract. Ortiz is 0-5 with a 7.54 ERA and was 5-11 with a 6.89 ERA in 2005.

When the Angels released Kevin Appier in 2003, they still owed him $15.67 million and that total is the current leader in the clubhouse.

Perhaps for you Bob, this will make up for the disappointment of not getting a chance at the T&T manager job.

T&T isn't nearly as screwed up as Togo.

If you say "Trinidad & Tobago" to Ken, he will start crying.

Ortiz was real good with the Giants and Braves. He really fell fast and hard.

Curiously, baseballreference.com finds Ortiz to be similar to, among others, Jason Schmidt, Kevin Millwood and Freddy Garcia (also George Pipgras). Perhaps he's another one who is finding that coffee and protein bars don't give him quite the same boost as what he used to like to use.

6 I'm not surprised he turned into a pumpkin rather quickly. I saw many of his starts when he was with the Giants, and he was quite the escape artist...always getting himself into and out of trouble. Always figured that he wouldn't have to lose much to suddenly not be able to get out of those jams anymore.

Guys like Ortiz, and his southpaw counterpart Kirk Rueter, upset this Dodgers fan many a time.

You would just watch those guys and think "C'mon! You have to beat these guys! They've got nothing!"
