Arizona decides to eat a big contract

by Bob Timmermann

I hear they're not bad with mustard on them and maybe a few baby greens on the side.

Arizona declared the Russ Ortiz experiment a disater and designated him for assignment. The D-Backs still owe Ortiz around $20 million and his contract runs through 2008.

Randy Choate is his replacement.

Kudos to Arizona for understanding the meaning of "sunk costs."

Boo on Arizona for signing the guy in the first place.

You have a few choices, and most of them end with Z.

I'm certain somebody will take a flyer on Ortiz after 10 days.

Russ Ortiz is lounging next to his swimming pool and sipping a beer, serene in the knowledge that someone will be paying him $20M over the next 2 years for doing nothing more than sitting by the pool and drinking beer. I don't know about you, but I really hate when that happens.

6 Other than the beer (I quit drinking a few years back) and the $20M, I can do that too.

This might help Arizona in the long run by restricting their ability to hand out Ortizian contracts and forcing them to play the talented batch of kids they have sitting around.

Perhaps we can have a MLB "Dead Pool", for players who might have enough talent to get DFAed with the largest salary.

Hmmm .... Edgardo Alfonso .... Russ Ortiz ....

Arizona has now passed the Angels for the title of "Biggest Contract Eaten".

Kevin Appier was the old record-holder around $14 million.

Surprises me the Yankees aren't contenders in that contest.
