Apparently, Reds GM Wayne Krivsky is part of a small cult that survives on sacrifices of blood of middle relievers.
Why do I say this?
Because the Reds went and picked up another middle reliever: Scott Schoeneweis. The Reds will send a player to be named later to Toronto in exchange for the lefty.
Presumably, Schoeneweis will take over Kent Mercker's role. Mercker is out for the season and needs elbow surgery. Brian Shackelford has been up and down and also in jail, but Shackelford was cleared of any wrongdoing.
How has Krivsky not made a grab for Lance Carter yet? The man was an All-Star, for heaven's sake. Ned needs to get on the phone and try to ease Krivsky's pain by sending him Carter for a prospect.
If the PTBNL is part of the 40 man roster, they would need to make it through waivers if they were traded this month. However, a PTBNL doesn't need to be named until 6 months after the completion of the deal, and they do not need to be placed through waivers in the off season. The Red Sox were going to send Adam Stern to the Orioles in the off season if the DRays caused problems (anyone know how that turned out?).
But this is Scott Schoeneweis, and the cash considerations are probably more valuable to the Blue Jays than the 28 year old A-baller that they would receive as the PTBNL.
