Seanez gone, Van Buren up
2006-08-19 09:37
by Bob Timmermann

The Red Sox after their marathon doubleheader debacle against the Yankees Friday, have shed another pitcher, Rudy Seanez was designated for assignment and Jermaine Van Buren called up to replace him.

Between games of the doubleheader, the Red Sox gave Jason Johnson the DFA tag and activated Keith Foulke from the DL.

Meanwhile, Theo Epstein plans to take on Wayne Krivsky in a game of rock/paper/scissors for the next mediocre middle reliever who wanders across the waiver wire.

"Hey, Wayne, look over there, it's Chad Poronto!"

In his major league career, Seanez started with Cleveland and then went to San Diego to Los Angeles to Atlanta back to San Diego back to Atlanta to Texas to Boston to Kansas City to Florida back to San Diego for a third time and then back to Boston.

Will Seanez be the next middle reliever caught by Wayne Krivsky's press gang?

There are 8 US teams. They play in one pool. The teams from outside the US make up the other pool. The Mexican representative is from Matamoros, which is the home of the longest continuously staffed U.S. consulate.

Saudi Arabia has never won the Little League Baseball World Series. The first year a Saudi Arabian team qualified for the Little League Baseball World Series was 1983. Arabian American Little League has represented the Middle East and Africa (EMEA) Region at the Little League Baseball World Series 13 times. This year's team marks the league's seventh consecutive World Series appearance and 12th since 1994.

And his Crenshaw High basketball team beat my Kennedy High basketball team in the City semis in my sophomore year. They also beat Kennedy in the finals the year before, but I wasn't at Kennedy then.

I can nurse a grudge a long time.

But then he went to Stanford. So there....

129 "Least likeable World Series champions ever."

Maybe, but they did crush the spirits of Red Sox fans for a decade or more, and for that I shall always be eternally grateful.

Game six was the same night as my brother's bachelor party, so I watched it in the basement of a firehouse in Morristown, NJ, amidst a couple dozen drunken Mets fans and a single, very vocal, drunken Sox fan. With two outs in the tenth, he started going on and on about how it was destiny that the Sox had won the Series, and in your face, Mets fans. The schadenfreude was extra special that night.

My contribution to Bob's post: I don't remember when it was that Bill James described Rudy Seanez as the "the worst pitching prospect in the history of the world."
