KDKA, which has been the Pirates flagship radio station since 1951 and broadcast the first baseball game on radio back in 1921, is being dropped by the Pirates for the 2007 season. The Pirates flagship station in 2007 will be an FM station, WPGB. WPGB is a Clear Channel station that already carries Steelers and University of Pittsburgh sports. Somewhere Edwin Armstrong smiles.
This year, the Cardinals dropped longtime flaghship station KMOX for KTRS, a station in which the Cardinals own a stake.
KDKA and KMOX are both 50,000 watt stations that could be heard for long distances.
KDKA is such an old radio station that it was allowed to have a call sign starting with "K" despite being east of the Mississippi River.
2 50,000 watts ain't what it used to be, I guess. I mean, giving away all that free baseball to people who will never buy a thing from the local businesses that pay for the commercials, who needs that? Doesn't make good business sense. Also, Clear Channel is the devil.
My buddy and I were switching between the Pirates game on KDKA and the Phils while driving through Connecticut Saturday night. Both were coming in better than the Red Sox game.
