The Pittsburgh Pirates became the fifth team overall and the second in the National League to be mathematically eliminatd from playoff contention. The Pirates, rained out today, were eliminated when St. Louis beat Houston 6-5. It was the Cardinals 77th win of the season and the Pirates can win no more than 76.

Although the wild card leading Padres have 74 wins, there is no way for the Pirates to finish ahead of both the Dodgers and Padres (and a few other teams).

I have always had a soft spot for the Pirates, and it's been sad to watch the decline of the franchise since the Leyland/Van Slyke/Bonds/Bonilla years.. Is Pittsburgh that much of a smaller market than, say, St. Louis? Why can't they get their act together?

Is it possible to calculate the opposite of a team's "magic number," that is a number that ticks down to them being mathematically eliminated?
