41-year old tosses no-hitter in Japan
2006-09-16 08:21
by Bob Timmermann

Masahiro Yamamoto of the first place Chunichi Dragons tossed a 3-0 no-hitter against the second place Hanshin Tigers at the Nagoya Dome.

Yamamoto was born on August 11, 1965 and according to this account, he is the oldest pitcher to throw a no-hitter in the Japanese majors. Yamamoto threw just 97 pitches.

I've seen Yamamoto pitch and he didn't throw hard enough to make a pane of glass wiggle.

Yamamoto's career record through 2005. He is 9-7 with a 3.56 ERA in 2006.

I saw Yamamoto pitch twice in 2003:

May 18, 2003 and May 24, 2003.

According to an Associated Press report today, "The number of Japanese living beyond 100 has almost quadrupled in the past 10 years..."

"The Health Ministry said Japan was likely to have 28,395 citized aged 100 years or older."

Even though most (85%) of the centenarians are women, Mr. Yamamoto is not even middle aged by some standards.

He's older than me by four months, so he's old!

Wonder how much it'll cost for Brian Sabean to sign this guy.

And the oldest MLB pitcher would be?

A fun bit of coincidence going on as well, which is always nice. ;)

Yamamoto likely throws about 60-70% the speed that Ryan did back in the early 1990s.

I wonder what the flags are for on either side of the Japanese Flag in photo 3 from May 18.

The green flag is the Central League flag. The blue and red one on the right is the Chunichi Dragons team flag.
I believe the white flag to the right of the Japanese flag is a "Nagoya Dome" flag.

The blue flag with the white "H" puzzles me.

I fully expect him to be on the Yankee roster next spring. For $15 mil.
