In first at last?

by Bob Timmermann

The Minnesota Twins have, for the first time, at the end of the day, finished it in first place. The Twins beat Kansas City 2-1 in 10 innings while Detroit lost at home to Toronto 8-6. The Twins and Tigers are both 95-64. But the Tigers hold the tiebreaker edge as they won the season series over Minnesota 11-8.

The Tigers finish at home with three games against Kansas City (which lost game #100 tonight) while the Twins are at home against the White Sox.

If the Twins can finish first, they would break the AL record for fewest days in first by a champion. The 1967 Red Sox led for just 20 days. The 1951 NY Giants were in first for just three days before their playoff against the Dodgers.

So that season series has pretty much determined who gets the A's and who gets the Yanks, barring a LaRussian collapse?

Man, this would have been a great year to be a Twins fan. Too bad my only rooting interest in the AL Central is Not the White Sox.
